Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he doesn’t think that second place in the Premier League is a ‘disaster’.
Arsenal have had chances to make up ground on league leaders Manchester United in recent weeks but have slipped up.
Disaster
The Gunners boss told Sky Sports:
“We have done well for our age as we are second in the league. Is that a disaster for you? There are teams who invest 10 times more than us, one player cost more than the whole team and they are behind us. I don’t understand the way people think,”
“We should not go overboard. We are second in the league so it’s not a scandal. Where is the common sense?
Comparison
“Some of the clubs behind us have done nothing for 20 years, yet suddenly they get a lot of praise. I don’t understand. We have eight games to go and are in a position to fight for the championship, so let’s give the maximum.
“If we are disappointed at the end then okay. Why do you say it’s a disaster when we are second in the league? Do the 18 clubs behind us have a fantastic disaster? If I cannot defend the fact that we are second in the league and fighting for the championship then I should stay at home, but I am in a fighting job.”
Expectations
Arsenal fans expect to be challenging for the Premier League title and they are currently still in with an outside chance of winning the league title. However the fact that Wenger is almost accepting that the Gunners are going to finish second does not bode well for the club.
If I was an Arsenal fan I would be worried by Wenger saying that second place wouldn’t be a disaster. It shows that he is no longer as ambitious as he has been in the past. He is just accepting defeat far too easily.
Disillusioned
Some Arsenal fans are now disillusioned with Arsene Wenger’s regime. According to reports Arsenal have got money to spend but Wenger has decided not to spend it. He has decided to stick with his policy of trying to bring in youngsters and develop them into top players.
Youngsters
The Frenchman is one of the best bosses in the world at developing young talent. He has a talent to spotting young players and bringing out their potential. However there have been question marks over whether Wenger’s latest crop of players is good enough to really challenge for honours.
Trophies
The club haven’t won a trophy in six years. Whenever the Gunners get in sight of a trophy they seem to get stage fright. Just like in the Carling Cup final 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City. They just couldn’t get over the finish line. For a club like Arsenal six years is a long time not to win a trophy.
Any other manager at a top club like Arsenal would have been sacked for such a barren spell. However Arsene Wenger has a special place in the hearts of Arsenal fans after revitalising the Gunners since in his time at the club.
Doubts
Arsene Wenger may be loved for the job he has done in north London but many Gunners supporters now doubt Wenger’s position at the club. A minority of them are now asking the Arsenal board to consider sacking the Frenchman.
Fresh
The Frenchman has been a fantastic servant to Arsenal. However maybe it’s time for a change. It seems that if Wenger remains at the club then Arsenal will be perennial runners-up. And it will also give Wenger the chance to move onto a fresh challenge elsewhere.
Are Arsenal fans happy with finishing second place?
