Is Sir Alex Ferguson right to back his under-fire keeper?

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has came out in defence of his under-fire keeper David de Gea.

The Scot insisted that the Spaniard will be a success at the club given time.

De Gea has made a shaky start to his United career and it’s led to doubts over whether he will be a success at Old Trafford.

Return

The Spanish youngster missed the midweek game with Stoke through a minor injury. His deputy Ben Amos managed to keep a clean sheet and had a decent game. However with the Red Devils facing a big trip to Chelsea this weekend Sir Alex Ferguson has a big decision.

United are without Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard who is on the treatment table. That means that Ferguson will have to decide whether to stick with Amos or recall De Gea.

Backing

The veteran boss backed the young Spaniard by telling Sky Sports:  “The boy has got a great talent. He has made two or three mistakes but it two or three years’ time we won’t be discussing that at all because he will have matured. Then he will be realising his potential.”

Ferguson brought the keeper in from Atletico Madrid in the summer for £18million, so I suppose he has to back his own judgment. De Gea was very highly-rated before he moved to England and was also being linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Young

At 21 years of age David de Gea is very young to be a first choice keeper at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Big clubs usually go for experienced keepers between the sticks. The United boss has never been a fan of signing young keepers but believed that he had to act quickly to secure the youngsters signature.

Keepers get better with experience and the Spaniard currently lacks experience at the top level. He will only learn from his mistakes. Unfortunately though every mistake he makes will raise questions over his ability to play for a club like Manchester United.

Competition

At Manchester United he faces competition for his place from Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard. The 27 year-old has been preferred to the young Spaniard at times and has been used to take the pressure off De Gea when he has came under-fire.

Lindegaard has always looked solid when he has played and it seems that the Dane is well liked at the club. However with Lindegaard at the club De Gea isn’t guaranteed first team football and maybe that’s what he needs to become a top Premier League keeper.

Talented

David de Gea is undoubtedly a talented young keeper, as Fergie stated. However I think the move to Manchester United may have came too soon for the youngster. If the youngster continues to have a poor time at Old Trafford it could permanently effect his confidence and his career could suffer.

Physical

One of the main problems David de Gea has had since moving to United is the fact he seems to find the Premier League too physical. He isn’t the biggest guy in the world and I’m sure the United backroom staff will be encouraging him to build himself up.

Time

At the end of last season when United were being linked with a move for De Gea I thought he would be a great signing for the Champions. I still think he could be the right man for Manchester United but it’s going to take time for him to become accustomed to the Premier League.

Will David de Gea prove to be a successful at Old Trafford?

@russ It’s obvious De Gea has upped his game after his spell on the sidelines. As it is a characteristic of great players to relish competition, this is a sign of great things to come. Once he will have come to terms with the physical demands of premier league football, he may well be a mainstay of Man U for many years to come! And as for Lindegaard, he is a big upgrade from Kucszak…

@ olivia true we got two great goalies! Knowing that there’s competition for places can only help a player’s game cause he knows he has to perform

De Gea has been better recently dealing with crosses and now is beginning to look the part. Some of his saves lately have been top notch. So whereas I would have gone with Lindegaard earlier in the season, De Gea looks to be the man now. Great to have two fine keepers though…

the manchester united keeper and the arsenal keeper are going to be the best goalies in england… Mark my words…. De gea just needs this season under his belt. next season, we’ll all probably be singing his praises. We’re still second only two points off city so his keeping not all that bad… Jus needs to deal with crosses

People are so dumb trashing De Gea the way the have. He can’t even drink yet! Keepers mature a lot later in age anyways. The only mistake made in signing De Gea is that they waited until VDS left the club. He would have been a great mentor for De Gea while learning the ropes. La Liga is a lot easier for keepers especially when dealing with crosses since everyone in La Liga is about 5 feet tall. De Gea is easily one of the most athletic keepers i have ever seen and will be one of the top keepers in the world once he gets fully developed and gets better on his crosses. His shot stopping ability is second to none and his distribution is tremendous! People just want something to complaing about. He’s young be patient…anyone who says he isn’t a good goalkeeper knows little to nothing about soccer or goalkeeping for that matter.

I don’t think it was too early to buy him, like the article said Fergie didn’t want to risk losing his signature by waiting but, he needed to be introduced to the Premier League slowly. It would have been ideal to bring him in as understudy to an experienced keeper and blood him slowly in english football with some mid to bottom of the table club games and cup games in the earlier rounds. Sadly for SAF and the lad himself, Van Der Sar hung up his boots and that’s led to De Gea having to be thrown in at the deep end. He makes mistakes with his positioning, often seems undecided whether to come out or stay on his line, particularly at set pieces, and looks decidedly uncomfortable under any kind of pressure from other players. However with time all these can be developed (along with some bulking up, as he looks a waif of a figure and is easily pressured/bullied) and his shot-stopping is at times superb (e.g Mata’s free kick and that wasn’t the only excellent stop he made in that game alone). Whether he will be given this time remains to be seen, SAF seems to be geniuinely supportive of him, but can he continue to be amidst pressure from fans and the media? If he is given time and is allowed to settle and mature into the Premiership I think he will go onto be a Man Utd great in the ilk of Schmeichel or Van Der Sar

Absolutely stunning save from Mata’s free kick yesterday. Still very worrying when he punches. he just need the confidence to command his area.

De Gea’s got promise and talent, yeah, but it was probably too early a time to buy him. I’d rather go with Lindegaard.
