Reports in today’s press suggest that Everton youngster Jack Rodwell is set to leave the club next month.
Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea are all being linked with a £20million bid for the newly capped England international.
Talented
At 20 years of age Jack Rodwell is one of the rising stars of English football. He is regarded as an elegant midfielder, who can go box to box.
Although he started of as a centre-back it looks unlikely he will return to the backline anytime soon as he has a talent for going forward.
Inconsistent
As a Everton supporter I watch Rodwell every week and can tell you he is so inconsistent. He is only young but he hasn’t yet hit anything like the form that was expected of him. He had a poor campaign last season but his form has been slightly better this term.
However if the likes of Spurs, City and Chelsea think they are getting the complete player they are wrong. For £20million they are only buying potential and Rodwell is full of that. Whether he can fulfil that potential is another matter completely.
Rodwell is also slightly injury-prone, which could put off any prospective buyer. I don’t think this will deter the teams chasing him though. His injury problems didn’t stop him receiving a call-up to the England squad and it looks like he could have a bright future in international football.
Money
The financial position of Everton is well documented and it’s a sad state of affairs to see the club struggle for money. In bygones years Everton were known as the Mersey Millionaires now they could described as the Premier League paupers.
If Everton do receive a £20million offer for Jack Rodwell then I think they will be forced into accepting it due to the financial restraints at the club.
Strengthen
Everton boss David Moyes is in desperate need of strengthening his squad. The team looks stale and out of ideas. One signing that would change the whole situation is a striker. The Blues have needed a striker for the past few seasons but haven’t had the money to buy one.
At times Moyes has had to resort to playing midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill up front. I’m sure Moyes would be given the majority of the Rodwell money after Everton chairman Bill Kenwright vowed to give Moyes money to spend in the winter transfer window.
A striker is a must in the January transfer window. In two of Everton’s recent games they failed to get any shots on target and that’s quite frankly ridiculous. There needs to be an attacking addition or the Toffee’s could be in big trouble this season.
Deal
To be honest if I was David Moyes I would sell Jack Rodwell and bring in what we have needed for years, a proven striker. Rodwell hasn’t progressed the way many people felt he would and all he is at the moment is potential.
Maybe one day he will go on to become this fantastic midfielder player or ball playing centre-back but maybe he won’t. Everton cannot afford to wait and find out. It would be a shame for Everton to lose a player like Jack Rodwell but that’s the harsh financial reality of modern day football, for most clubs anyway.
Good
I believe Jack Rodwell leaving Everton could be a good move for everybody. The player will get fresh impetus, Everton will get money to strengthen the squad and whoever signs him will get a good up and coming player, everybody wins.
Will Jack Rodwell leave Everton in the January transfer window?
