The Premier League has been rather strange this season. Nobody has ran away with the league title and nobody has been cut adrift at the bottom of the table.
Until the last few days it looked like Manchester United had the league title sewn up.
Title
The title race has only just got interesting in the last few weeks with Chelsea picking up form and Manchester United slipping up at the Emirates Stadium. However the race to stay in the top flight has proved fascinating all season.
Strugglers
The last few weeks have cut down the likely suspects for relegation to six teams. However before that most of the bottom half of the Premier League looked vulnerable to the drop.
The current bottom three is West Ham, Wolves and Wigan. However Blackpool are above the dreaded drop line by the virtue of just goal difference. Even Birmingham in 15th place will still be looking over their shoulder until the last game of the season.
Exciting
The fight to stay in the top flight has proven exciting all season with the bottom sides gaining unlikely victories and keeping themselves in with a chance of staying up.
Wolves are a prime example of that. They have won at Anfield and they also defeated Chelsea at Molineux. Both of those victories were unexpected and the sort of result that could just be enough to keep them in the Premier League.
Own Hands
It’s a strange thing to say but I think West Ham have their survival in their own hands. They are currently bottom of the league but all their remaining games are against fellow strugglers.
First the Hammers host Blackburn at the Boleyn Ground. They then visit Wigan and finish the season with a home game against striker-less Sunderland. Their problem is however that they currently couldn’t buy a win.
All three remaining games are cup finals for the Hammers. West Ham aren’t a poor side on their day but unfortunately they don’t have enough good days.
Naive
I don’t believe that any of the sides currently in the relegation zone are really poor sides. However some of them have shown naivety at times which has been brutally exposed. There is no team who have been woeful and that’s why the bottom of the table is so congested.
Brave
I know most neutrals are hoping that Blackpool stay in the league. The attraction of the Tangerines is their sheer gung-ho style of attacking play. Unfortunately their attacking style has made them concede far more goals than you can afford to in the Premier League.
Their underdog pluckiness has also attracted the neutrals admiration. They are a brave side and never know when they are beaten. Their prospects don’t look too good however with games against Tottenham, Bolton and Manchester United still remaining.
They will need luck on their side if they are to survive in the Premier League after that set of tough fixtures.
Wire
It looks likely that the race for Premier League survival will go down to the final day of the season. And at the moment it’s really hard to guess who will be the unlucky sides to be relegated.
For the neutral it will prove enthralling, for the fans of the clubs involved it will be nerve shattering. For some there will be jubilation and for others despair. Football is all about emotion and the final day of the Premier League season will definitely be emotional.
Which teams will be heading for the Championship next season?
