Manchester United are being linked with a move for Ajax’s young midfielder Christian Eriksen.
United don’t have the best midfield options and are expected to bring in a midfielder in the winter transfer window.
Talented
Christian Eriksen made a name for himself very early at Ajax making his debut at just 17 years of age.
The Ajax staff and fellow players recognised his playmaking talents almost instantly and he has been compared to former-Ajax players Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van Der Vaart.
Eriksen is regarded as a typical number ten, who can read the game well and make things happen from midfield. The highest compliment that I have heard him receive was when he was compared to Danish legend Michael Laudrup, also an ex-Ajax star.
Interested
According to Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen the Red Devils are very much interested in signing the 19 year-old. The Dutchman told Voetbal International: “ This is a player that is on our radar,”
“But that is to be expected. If people weren’t looking, no-one would ever have an opinion on these players. It is true that a player like Eriksen would fit our transfer policy. He is being strongly linked with us, but to suggest that we are about to make a move is not true.”
United’s transfer policy is to buy promising young players and develop them into world-class talents. This policy has paid dividends in recently years with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, to mention just a few.
Limited
Everybody knows that Manchester United are currently struggling with their midfield options. Defender Phil Jones has performed admirably in central midfield but surely he can’t be a long-term solution? He is talented but he has been earmarked as a defender.
Michael Carrick hasn’t had the best season of his career but he put in a good display at QPR at the weekend and even got on the score sheet at 72nd time of asking.
Losing Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher was a big blow to United’s cause. The midfield schemer will be out of action for an unknown amount of time with a bowel condition. He was never the greatest technical player but he always worked hard and gave the side some drive from the middle of the park.
Brazilian Anderson has been much criticised but if he was fit he would have provided United boss Sir Alex Ferguson with another option. However he is also on the United casualty list.
Gamble
I really do think that Christian Eriksen is worth a gamble for Manchester United. He is still very young but his stock in the game will only rise. The Danish press is talking about him being the best player the country has produced since the Laudrup brothers Michael and Brian, high praise indeed.
Eriksen will go on to bigger things and if United get in their early they could sign a future world superstar. His fee is likely to be relatively high but it’s unlikely to be anything near what it could be in a few years if he fulfils his potential.
Destiny
Christian Eriksen has all the attributes and potential to go on to become a top player. He is destined to play for a top team, in a top league. It seems that he is in no rush to move away from Amsterdam though and it also seems he is willing to wait for his big chance.
Whether that big chance comes in January remains to be seen. However I’m sure this won’t be the last time you will hear the name Christian Eriksen mentioned in one of our editorials. Watch this space.
