(GSM) – CONI chief Gianni Petrucci has backed Marcello Lippi’s choices for his World Cup squad.
The Italy coach was criticised for not including the likes of Francesco Totti, Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano in his squad for South Africa, while few in the media expect the nation to retain the World Cup.
“I agree with everything that Lippi has said and done,” insisted the President of the Italian Olympic Committee.
“Sometimes he can use colourful language with the media, but in essence he has my full support.
“I don’t understand why there is so much scepticism around the Nazionale. Only Brazil have won more World Cups than Italy.
“I do not believe that Lippi left any world class players behind who could’ve made the difference in South Africa.
“The trouble with Italy is that everyone thinks they are an armchair Coach and therefore ready to throw in their criticism.
“There may be scepticism now, but I bet once the World Cup starts we’ll see record viewing figures for Italy’s games.”
