With a spot in the quarter-finals of this year’s Women’s World cup on the line, Italy will meet China in Montpellier on Tuesday evening.

Starting with Italy, while a string of changes may have seen a weakened Le Azzurre side suffer a 1-0 loss against Brazil in their Group C finale, Milena Bertolini’s side find their confidence at a high. Led by leading goalscorer Cristiana Girelli who has already registered three strikes at this year’s tournament, the Blues have tasted defeat just once in 90 minutes since the start of November, a 12 match run. Still boosted by their very eye-catching display in their empathic 5-0 win over Jamacia last week, Italy should be confident of securing a spot in the quarter-finals in midweek.

As for China, while a third-place finish in Group B may have seen them just manage to book a route to the knockout stage of this year’s tournament, the Steel Roses have failed to make any real impact out in France. Aside from a close-fought 1-0 win over fellow strugglers South Africa, that is remarkably the Reds’ only victory across any format in their last eight outings. A huge part of China’s issues has come down to their continued struggles in the final third. Recording just a single goal in Group B, they have now found the net just once in over 300 minutes of action.
