Italy came back from behind to surprisingly beat a ten-woman England 2-1 at the 2009 UEFA Women’s Championships. The winning goal came with eight minutes left to play.
The match only lasted 28 minutes for England defender Casey Stoney, who pushed Melania Gabbiadini and was sent off as result.
England did take the lead ten minutes later. Karen Carney went down in the penalty area and Fara Williams made no mistake from the spot.
But the Italians levelled in minute 56, when a Tatiano Zorri cross was controlled and then struck home by Patrizia Panico. The winner came on 82 minutes. A great distance striker from Alessia Tuttino failed past keeper Rachel Brown for a 2-1 final result.
