Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been heavily criticized lately, abused even by a section of the football public via social media. The 30-year-old did himself no favours when he scored an own-goal in England’s friendly win over Scotland earlier this week, but West Ham striker Michail Antonio, who has played quite a few times against Maguire, believes the criticism received by the former United captain is rather excessive.

Truth be told, Maguire’s performances have been poor, both for United and England, especially in the light of the vast expectations placed on his shoulders after his £80m transfer from Leicester City in 2019.
But it’s sometimes easy to forget that professional football players are human, and abusing anyone for any reason is certainly wrong. Those who profess to love the game, and particularly to support United and/or England, need to be aware that their not helping the cause by publicly berating one of their players.
