Peter Odemwingie was delighted to help West Bromwich Albion’s ascent up the table with a brace in the Baggies’ 3-1 win over Newcastle United.

West Brom moved from 12th to seventh with the three points at the Hawthorns on Sunday, and Odemwingie was the man of the moment with goals in the 71st and 89th minutes.

Cameroon international Somen Tchoyi also scored for West Brom in the 32nd minute, while Danish forward Peter Lovenkrands grabbed a consolation goal for Newcastle in injury time.

It was West Brom’s second straight victory, following a 4-1 demolition of Everton, and Odemwingie is thrilled his team-mates have responded so convincingly after losing 3-0 to Stoke City.

“We had a series of bad games but the last two games we have got six points, we are very happy,” the Nigerian international told Sky Sports.

“I think it’s a very good response from our team after losing, especially at home in the derby (against Stoke).”

“There was instruction from the coaches to stay high with the defenders because I was all over the place in the first half so I tried to do that and it paid off for me, so it’s good sometimes to listen.”

Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo was pleased with his side for controlling possession and dominating against a lacklustre Magpies outfit.

“I thought we played very well. I thought everything about today was good,” Di Matteo told Sky Sports.

“We scored three great goals and we controlled the game for the majority of the time.”

“I think we pressed them quite high up the pitch, we never let them settle in. We recovered possession quite well.”

“I thought the first goal was excellent goal. The second goal came from pressing them and the third as well.”

Di Matteo also denied his side were simply hoping to avoid relegation after being promoted last term.

“No absolutely not. We are trying to learn to be in the Premier League,” he said.

“We need to keep it going game by game. We have a great game against Aston Villa next week, which hopefully we can go into with a lot of confidence.”
