Montedio Yamagata recorded their third win of the J.League season with a 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Avispa Fukuoka on Sunday.
Yoshiyuki Shinoda’s team was promoted for this campaign but their loss in Fukuoka has left them 11 points from safety in the top flight.
Montedio have also made a slow start but a goal in each half against the bottom-placed outfit has helped them to within seven points of 15th-placed Vissel Kobe.
Midfielder Masaru Akiba gave the visitors the lead on the half hour before striker Yu Hasegawa sealed the win after 72 minutes.
The victory ended Montedio Yamagata’s five-match winless run in the league.
