Jagielka for England, says Moyes

David Moyes claimed Phil Jagielka should be part of England’s Euro 2012 squad after Everton’s 2-0 win at Swansea on Saturday.

Leighton Baines put the visitors ahead before the hour mark with a brilliant free-kick, before Nikica Jelavic secure the three points with 15 minutes left to play.

The Everton manager hailed several performances but highlighted Jagielka’s international credentials after.

“The players got their performances spot on, they are playing really well at the moment,” Moyes told the club’s official website.

“I thought Phil Jagielka was terrific today, he showed why he is an England centre-half and should go to the Euros – because he can do a bit of everything.

“Steven Pienaar probably set three chances up which we missed when we should have scored. Phil Neville played great in midfield as well.”

Moyes, 48, said his side were good value for the win due to their work without the ball against the Welsh outfit.

“It is fantastic. I have seen some really good sides come here and struggle to win, from my point of view it was thoroughly deserved,” he said.

“And the players played really well today. Swansea had a bit of possession but not as much as in other games.

“We were excellent without the ball in the first half. We carved out numerous opportunities in the second half to win the game much more comfortably.”

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers was bitterly disappointed.

“We weren’t at the top of our game today,” he told the Swans’ official website.

“We played well but we were up against a very experienced side that have done well over a number of years in the Premier League.

“We are disappointed with the two goals; we switched off at the first one where we have allowed the player to come inside and then we haven’t defended well enough with the second goal.

“But it was a great game to learn from as Everton have some really experienced players and a couple of Champions League winners in their side.

“If you are not at the top level then teams like Everton will come and win games. But give credit to them, they came here and did very well and they deserved the win.”

The 39-year-old thought that his side ran out of attacking ideas but remains pleased with their recent run of form.

“We needed to change the game and try and make it a little bit unpredictable,” he said.

“But we were chasing it and it wasn’t to be, but we’ll learn from it.

“Three wins out of four is terrific and we are in the top ten of the most competitive league in the world.

“We won’t get too down about it, we had some good spells in the game but we lost to a side that took their chances well.”
