Phil Jagielka has returned to Everton and will miss England’s friendly international with Sweden on Tuesday.

The FA confirmed the centre-back’s departure from Fabio Capello’s squad on Sunday due to a prior agreement with Premier League club Everton, rather than any new injury.

Jagielka sustained a broken toe during Everton’s victory over Fulham in October and has required injections to get through games.

The 29-year-old impressed alongside Joleon Lescott in England’s victory over Spain at Wembley on Saturday but is now returning to Goodison Park after Everton requested he not be risked in both friendlies.

Gary Cahill is likely to be given the nod at centre-back, while Capello confirmed Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge will be handed his senior debut for the national side.
