James told to leave Real

James Rodriguez has been told to leave Real Madrid, according to Colombian journalist Carlos Antonio Velez (as relayed by AS).

Apparently, it was the head coach of the Colombia national team, Carlos Queiroz, who advised the attacking midfielder to do so, in order to keep his match fitness levels high enough to be counted on for the Copa America in 2020.

Queiroz in an international coach who values his players playing regularly for their clubs, something he has stressed often enough. James had a good start of the season, featuring in the starting XI at Real more often than not, but with the emergence of Rodrygo Goes and the much-improved performances of Eden Hazard after returning from injury, he has seen his game-time reduced.

The 27-year-old spent the last two seasons away on loan at Bayern Munich, who opted against triggering their option to buy. He was subsequently linked with departure with clubs like Manchester United, Napoli and Atletico Madrid all reportedly interested, but no move materialized. It seems, if he wants to play at the Copa America next year, he will have to find a new club, or do what it takes to break into the plans of Zinedine Zidane long-term.
