January 2nd: Thursday’s Scottish Double – 3/1 Special, Betting Tips & Predictions

With Scotland’s elite getting 2025 underway in midweek, we have a stacked schedule from across the Premiership on Thursday afternoon.

Watching the latest instalment of the Old Firm rivalry taking place from Ibrox, European dreamers Aberdeen will also be seeking a much-welcomed boost.

Ahead of what could prove to be a frantic afternoon of Premiership action, we have taken a look at some of the most appealing betting tips that are available on Thursday afternoon.

15:00 St. Johnstone vs Hibernian

Although Hibernian might have opened the New Year still battling it out in the bottom-half of the Premiership table, Thursday’s guests are enjoying what has become a real flurry. Putting in another gritty performance last weekend as they claimed a 1-0 victory at home against Kilmarnock, David Gray’s men should find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Despite opening December with a 3-0 loss against Celtic, that was nothing more than a minor blip for Hibs. Landing a 2-1 victory away at Hearts on Boxing Day, the Greens have won each of their previous four Premiership appearances by an aggregate score of 9-3. Clinching back-to-back 3-1 wins against Ross County and Aberdeen last month, Hibernian should be smelling a golden opportunity here. Mustering 15 points from their previous six Premiership showdowns, Gray’s side have also suffered just a single defeat since back on November 23rd. It should also be noted, Hibs have claimed consecutive victories away from Eater Road for the first time this season.

While Hibernian might find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high, the same can’t be said for a struggling St. Johnstone. In the midst of what has been a real crisis, the Saints are sat-rockbottom of the Premiership table and pencilled in as a leading relegation contender in 2025. Falling to a routine 4-0 drumming at the hands of defending champions Celtic last weekend, Simo Valakari’s side have lost each of their previous four appearances against top-flight opposition. Including a 2-1 loss at home against Dundee United on Boxing Day, the Blues have lost each of those four consecutive outings by an aggregate score of 11-4. Coming under a huge amount of scrutiny this season, St. Johnstone have also put just a single point on the board from any of their last six Premiership showdowns. Likewise, claiming just a sole victory since the end of October, Thursday’s guests were also hit with a 3-1 defeat when they last welcomed Hibernian to McDiarmid Park back in April.

15:00 Hearts vs Motherwell

While Hearts might have sprung a famous upset last season as they secured a bronze medal finish among Scotland’s elite, the Jambos have come crashing back down to earth this time around. Now battling it out at the foot of the Premiership table and drastically seeking some kind of boost, Neil Critchley certainly had some real pressure on his shoulders. Last seen signing off 2024 with an action-packed 2-2 stalemate away at Ross County, the one-time Liverpool coach has seen his downbeat squad muster just a pair of wins from any of their previous 12 appearances across all competitions. With that rut stemming all the way back to a 2-1 victory against St. Johnstone on November 2nd, Thursday’s hosts have also gained a reputation for their glaring defensive struggles. Watching their iconic Europa Conference League adventure come to a heartbreaking end last month as they could only settle for an infamous 2-2 stalemate against Petrocub, Hearts have claimed just a sole clean sheet since the end of October.

Although Motherwell might have secured back-to-back Premiership victories last month, the Steelmen have struggled to find any kind of stability so far this season. Suffering a second-half collapse at home against Scottish giants last weekend as they had to settle for a 2-2 stalemate, Stuart Kettlewell’s side have won just a pair of their previous eight Premiership appearances. With that run stemming back to their own respective 2-1 victory against St. Johnstone on November 9th, Thursday’s guests are also seeking their own defensive steel. Despite securing an action-packed 4-3 win against Dundee United last month, Motherwell have remarkably recorded just a sole clean sheet from any of their previous 21 straight matchups across all competitions. However, still clinging onto their spot in the top-half, Kettlewell’s side will be excited by their most recent showdown against Hearts. Landing a 3-1 win when they last met the Jambos back in August, the Steelmen will be desperately seeking a repeat display here.
