Surprise England call-up Matt Jarvis is hoping his rapid rise to prominence continues with a debut cap in Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier.
The Three Lions travel to Millennium Stadium to face Wales at the weekend, and Jarvis is in line to become the first Wolverhampton player since Steve Bull to pull on the England shirt. The nod from England manager Fabio Capello will represent a complete turnaround in Jarvis’ fortunes after the winger was cast off from Millwall as a 16-year-old.Jarvis went on to suffer relegation from the Championship with Gillingham before being signed to Wolves, then a Championship side, in 2007.He gained promotion to the top-flight with Wolves at the end of the 2008/09 season, and his solid form in the Premier League eventually attracted Capello’s attention. After completing his first training session with his England team-mates on Tuesday, Jarvis admitted to feeling a little overwhelmed.”It is hard to describe. I was more speechless than anything, but obviously it was a fantastic feeling,” Jarvis said.”Training was good, short and sharp, I just wanted to get out and train and obviously get more comfortable.””I didn’t really know any of them so it was a bit like having your first day at school again, but it’s been great meeting everyone and they’ve made me feel welcome.”Asked to describe his career so far, Jarvis said: “It’s been a rollercoaster.””I am delighted with how I’ve done it, going up with Gillingham and then going to Wolves and winning promotion.”The fledging international is also hopeful that a debut appearance with England will send him back to the Premier League and Wolves’ relegation scrap full of belief.”Hopefully we can (stay up),” Jarvis said.”I think we’ve been playing well the last few months, just not got the right results. But hopefully we are pulling that around and I’ll be full of confidence after this and everyone can use that as well.”
