Jekyll and Hyde Bremen tackle Mourinho´s Milan

Werder Bremen's Jekyll and Hyde form means they are only playing for pride and a place in the UEFA Cup when Inter Milan come to the Weser Stadium on Tuesday.

Bremen showed their more lethargic side, which has seem them draw four of their five Champions League games so far to be rooted to the bottom of Group B, when they were beaten 1-0 by a late goal at Karlsruhe on Saturday.

Having hammered Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 the weekend before, Thomas Schaaf-coached Bremen have been erratic all season and captain Frank Baumann was well aware of the unacceptable performance ahead of the Inter game.

“It took us far too long to wake up,” said the Bremen skipper.

“The really annoying thing for me is that it isn't the first time that we've had problems following a good, or very good game.

“It's clear now that this situation is no coincidence.

“Unfortunately we have two faces this season, we can put on top performances but also have terrible games.”

In their last Champions League match, Werder Bremen staged a great recovery to rescue a point against Anorthosis Famagusta, but it was not enough to keep their Champions League qualifying prospects alive.

As Group B reaches its conclusion, the best Bremen can do is finish third and claim a UEFA Cup berth as Werder look for their first win of the group stages against Inter.

For Jose Mourinho-coached Inter, there is first place to play for and also the opportunity to rid themselves of the memory of the surprise home defeat by Panathinaikos last time out.

Inter picked up their sixth consecutive Serie A win on Saturday when they routed Lazio 3-0 to stretch their lead to six points at the top of the table.

Mourinho's side took the lead in the second minute when Walter Samuel headed in Sulley Muntari's cross and they made it two just before the interval when Lazio defender Mobido Diakite deflected Maicon's low cross into his own net.

Ten minutes after the break, Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed in Esteban Cambiasso's free-kick from the right to seal a win that takes Inter clear of Juventus.

“We're a strong side and these players have a fantastic spirit,” said Mourinho.

“The whole group is doing well, not just the eleven players on the pitch.

“We're in good shape and full of confidence, this really is a good period for us.”
