John Barnes has suggested to BBC Sport that Liverpool need not sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are interested in signing Thiago from German and European powerhouse Bayern this summer.

The report in the Spanish publication has claimed that it is very likely that the former Barcelona central midfielder will move to the Premier League champions.

Former Liverpool star Barnes has warned the Reds against making a move for the 29-year-old central midfielder, and believes that another creative midfielder could see Jurgen Klopp’s side concede more goals.

Barnes told BBC Sport regarding Thiago and Liverpool: “With the midfield being very workmanlike, they are a lot of points better off than everybody else.

“The reason you can have two full-backs attacking at the same time and three strikers is because they have three hard-working midfielders to protect that situation.

“If you get another creative midfielder and you want your full-backs and front three to attack, then maybe you are going to concede more goals.”

Bayern Munich spell

Thiago has been on the books of Bayern – who are rated at 3/1 to win the Champions League this season by Betfair – since the summer of 2013 when he joined from Spanish and European giants Barcelona.

The Spain international central midfielder has won the Bundesliga as many as seven times and the DFB-Pokal on four separate occasions with the German club.

The 29-year-old is at the peak of his powers and is at the top of his game, and he would make an immediate impact at Liverpool.

According to WhoScored, the central midfielder made 20 starts and four substitute appearances in the Bundesliga for Bayern this past season, scoring three goals in the process.

Thiago has also made five starts and one substitute appearance in the Champions League for the German outfit this campaign, providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
