Wolves defender Roger Johnson says his team-mates are ready for their “massive” clash against fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic.

Wigan are bottom of the Premier League while Wolves are just two points clear of the danger zone, and Johnson is hoping to pull further away from the drop with a win at Molineux on Sunday.

“It’s a massive game. We need to win it and they need to win it,” Johnson told the Birmingham Mail.

“We need to have a right go at it, especially at home. We tried a new shape against Man City which seemed to work.”

“We try to find a good tempo in every game but in football it doesn’t work like that. Whatever formation we play we’ll be bang up for it.”

“There’s been a lot of individual errors which have led to goals. We’ll look to cut those out and put on a good show.”

Wolves fans have begun to voice their discontent in recent weeks after a series of poor results and Johnson understands their frustration.

“The fans haven’t been so happy and that’s fair enough because we’ve not performed,” he said.

“Everyone is allowed their say but I thought the fans at Man City were great and really got behind us. We put on a good performance and we’ll be looking to do another one on Sunday.”

Johnson insisted that the team was pulling in the right direction and gave his full backing to under-fire manager Mick McCarthy.

“We’re a good set of lads and a tight unit,” he said.

“The manager and the staff are all pulling in the right direction in trying to come out of this run and get a win on the board.”

“We need everybody, players, staff and fans, to pull together.”
