Adam Johnson believes the Manchester rivalry is becoming more intense as the gap between the Premier League teams narrows.
The Manchester City midfielder was part of the squad that hammered United 6-1 at Old Trafford earlier this season but Johnson admitted they will have to work hard to repeat the victory in the FA Cup on Sunday.
“It’s getting more and more fierce every game. We’re closer to them than we’ve ever been,” the England international told ITV Sport.
“The two squads have got great players in them and the games are now just individual battles against top players and I think that’s what people want to see. I think it’s got more intense.”
“In derbies you’ve got to go that bit further and work that bit harder. Hopefully one of our star players will produce a moment of magic and win the game.”
Johnson believes City can end United’s domination of the Premier League but does not think the Red Devils’ recent poor form will stop them seeking revenge on Sunday.
“I don’t think they’re a side that will stay down. They will always come back fighting and there could be a backlash against us,” he said.
“It would be wrong to say that Manchester United’s domination will end overnight, but it is up to us to dominate the Premier League and win trophies.”
