Jol planned England return

New Fulham manager Martin Jol has said he always wanted to return to England to coach.

Jol, 55, has taken over at Craven Cottage from Mark Hughes, who resigned as Fulham boss at the beginning of June.

Since being sacked from Tottenham in 2007, the Dutchman has had spells with Hamburg and Ajax, winning the Dutch Cup in 2010, but Jol believes he has unfinished business in the English Premier League.

“Everybody knew I would like to come back to England,” Jol said.

“I said it when I left, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, I will be back, and now I am back.”

Jol said he is looking forward to beginning the season at the London club, and said being based in the English capital was one of the chief attractions of the job.

“I think Fulham is a traditional club, like Spurs, West Ham – all the London clubs,” Jol said.

“For me they are attractive clubs and Fulham they gave me a good feeling last year.”

“I spoke to Mr (Mohamed) Al-Fayed (owner) as well, not for hours but it was nice.”

“He invited me to Park Lane so I had a good feeling with this club it’s a traditional club. I think Fulham is happy, I am happy so hopefully we can keep it that way.”

Jol said he does not want to waste any time before bolstering his squad in preparation for the start of the 2011-12 season.

“I still feel even though I know the players we need to take a good few in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

“It’s a good squad with good experienced players and with a couple of young exciting players like (striker Moussa) Dembele I know very well from Holland.”

“I know four or five players have left the club so we need some strength and depth. We need a couple of players.”
