Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has lashed out at Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie following the striker’s scuffle with fellow Dutchman Tim Krul in Monday’s Arsenal-Newcastle United clash at the Emirates Stadium.
Van Persie seemingly instigated the rift by muttering something to Krul, perhaps in Dutch, because he felt that Krul was time-wasting.
In all honesty, the goalkeeper did nothing wrong by making Van Persie close him down before clearing the ball down field.
Maybe Van Persie didn’t want to run the extra 10 yards, who knows.
Nonetheless, all the “visual” evidence seems to make the Gunners skipper look like the guilty party, and rightfully so according to Jonas Gutierrez.
“I think Van Persie was wrong,” the Argentine told The Journal. “There was no need for him to do that – they have won the game, it is finished.”
The man’s got a point, and once again Van Persie doesn’t come off as the innocent party after trying to create something out of nothing really.
It could have just been frustration that spiraled out of control, but you’ve got to keep your nerve in moments like that, especially when your captain fantastic as they say.
But Gutierrez’s comments didn’t stop there.
“I can’t understand a person like that,” continued Gutierrez. “I think it is not right. When you feel like that, it is because you are not a good person. I don’t care about the football, I’m talking about the person. When you have people who do that, it’s not right.
“We are all used to getting kicks – it’s a sport of contact – but when you have things like that, it is not right. It is not easy to accept.”
The Argentine international went on to add that Van Persie was the only Arsenal player who reacted the way he did, and that his teammates urged him to “calm down”.
In other news, Arsenal are now miraculously within one point of bitter north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur thanks to Thomas Vermaelen and his injury-time winner.
Considering their current form, it wouldn’t be outrageous to tip Arsenal to move into third place in the Premier League table before the end of the season.
That being said, people are writing Spurs off way too soon after losses against Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton, considering that Tottenham’s last five league games of 2011-12 are against Bolton Wanderers (away), Queens Park Rangers (away), Blackburn Rovers (home), Aston Villa (away) and Fulham (home).
Which north London club will finish the season higher in the Premier League table?
