Socceroos goalkeeper Brad Jones’ son Luca died on Friday aged five, following an 18-month battle with leukaemia.
Jones quit the Socceroos camp on the eve their World Cup campaign in South Africa last year when Luca was diagnosed with the illness.
Jones is currently on loan at Derby after joining Premier League giant Liverpool from Middlesbrough in August.
Players from his former club Middlesbrough wore black armbands in Luca’s honour in their Championship match on Saturday, while Socceroos team-mate Tim Cahill offered his condolences on Twitter.
“Thoughts and prayers to Brad Jones and family. Rest in peace Luca u beautiful Angel. Itsnotfair,” he tweeted.
Liverpool issued a statement saying: “The thoughts of everybody at LFC are with Brad, his partner Dani, and their family and friends at this very sad time.”
Jones acknowledged the support he received by posting a tweet, which included a reference to Liverpool’s famous football anthem ‘You’ll never walk alone’.
“Thank you all so much for your messages. YNWA,” he said.
