Phil Jones has talked up the influence of Nemanja Vidic after Manchester United’s clean sheet and three points against Everton on Saturday.
Jones featured at right-back as the reigning English Premier League champions produced an impressive defensive performance to win 1-0 at Goodison Park and deny their hosts a point despite late pressure.
He was delighted with Vidic’s return to the side after the Serbian missed the derby defeat to Manchester City last Sunday.
“He is our captain and you don’t want to go without your captain,” Jones said of Vidic to MUTV.
“The determination and greatness shows and it rubs off on everyone else.”
The 19-year-old also hailed his team’s spirit after the 1-0 win against the Toffees, insisting that every player aided the defensive effort under pressure.
“We fought defensively as a unit. We have 11 players when we defend, not just four,” he said.
“I thought 11 players defended terrifically well when Everton were throwing everything, the kitchen sink, at us at the end.”
“I thought we stood strong as a unit and held together.”
