Schalke will be without midfielder Jermaine Jones for their UEFA Champions League clash with Basel on Tuesday.
Jens Keller’s men travel to St Jakob-Park with both sides having won their opening games in the competition this season.
However, according to the midfielder, he will not feature in the squad for the game as he will undergo surgery on a meniscus injury.
“It’s true that the club has taken me from the squad so I can take the time to repair my meniscus,” Jones told Bild.
“Regardless of what the club decided now, surgery eventually would have been inevitable because of the persistent pain.”
Jones was substituted four minutes from time in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
The injury could rule him out for six weeks, which would mean he misses the USA’s final FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica and Panama.
