Rennes hotshot Joris Gnagnon has moved to confirm that he was a target for Marseille during the summer transfer window.
The product of club’s famous youth academy quickly developed into one of Ligue 1’s most promising defenders and he was tipped to make a big club move this summer.
Sevilla and Marseille were keen on his services, but l’OM ultimately decided to go for experience, signing Adil Rami and Aymen Abdennour.
That proved a bad decision as the Ivorian impressed in Rennes’ 3-1 triumph at Stade Velodrome, and the centre-back admits he doesn’t know why Marseille didn’t make their interest concrete.
“That’s a good question. I don’t know, I don’t know why it didn’t happen, the approaches were very, very weak,” Gnagnon said after the game.
The 20-year-old, who earlier switched his allegiance from France to Ivory Coast, has so far amassed 39 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring 2 goals.
