Joseph Yobo coy on Arsenal interest

Nigerian defender Joseph Yobo has denied that he is in talks over a move to the Emirates, albeit confirming that he has been on the radar of Arsene Wenger.

The former Everton captain has been mentioned as one of the targets for the Gunners, who are in the midst of a serious defensive crisis, but he has denied reports of any talks taking place.

“I read Arsenal was interested in me; it was news to me,” Yobo told The Independent.

“If negotiations are taking place, I am not aware. Maybe the club is talking with my agent. There is no formal contact with anybody.”

Nevertheless, the 34-year-old has revealed that he was once on Arsene Wenger’s wish list, but ultimately missed out on a switch to North London.

“I know Arsene Wenger admires me a lot and wanted me to replace Sol Campbell some years ago, but Everton blocked the move. He wanted me to partner Kolo Toure in defence; I was younger then.”

Joseph Yobo has got plenty of Premier League experience, having made a total of 220 Premier League appearances for Everton during the eight years at Goodison Park.

Since leaving the Toffees, the highly rated defender enjoyed three very successful seasons at Fenerbahce, while also making eight league outings for Norwich during the loan spell last term.
