Copa America winners Uruguay were greeted by rapturous applause from tens of thousands of fans upon their return home on Tuesday.

Oscar Tabarez’s side were comfortable 3-0 winners over Paraguay in Sunday’s final at South American football’s showpiece event, with Diego Forlan netting a double for the winners.

It was a record-making 15th Copa America title for Uruguay and followed on from their fourth-place finish at the 2010 World Cup.

Supporters waited until 3am local time to greet their heroes at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.

The stadium was a sea of national flags as the celebrations kicked on through the night, with Atletico Madrid striker Forlan receiving much of the crowd’s attention.
