Contrary to previous reports claiming Juventus have reached an agreement with Genoa over a summer transfer for Cristian Romero, the Argentine is still a Genoa player.
Bianconeri were said to be involved in extensive negotiations with Genoa this winter with a €20 million transfer fee mentioned by Sportitalia in January, but Genoa president Enrico Preziosi insists the club would like to hold on to their key player.
The 20-year-old Argentina centre-back has made 14 appearances in his debut season in Serie A this year after breaking into the senior squad from the Under-19 side and Juventus have been largely impressed by his qualities.
Bianconeri are looking to rejuvenate their ageing backline and have identified Romero as a perfect successor to the likes of Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli.
“Romero? Juventus are very interested but we would like to keep him,” Preziosi told Sky Sport Italia.
Juventus ended up bringing Martin Caceres back as a short-term solution this winter after being struck by a defensive crisis but are widely expected to return for Romero once the transfer market reopens in the summer.
