Looking to reclaim their spot in the top-four this weekend, DFP Pokal finalists Bayer Leverkusen will make the trip to what is a downbeat Veltins Arena on Sunday evening.
Starting with the hosts, only managing to pick up a point away at fellow strugglers Union Berlin last weekend, David Wagner’s position at the Veltins Arena appears to be growing more untenable by the week. Returning from the enforced break in the midst of a continued disastrous patch, the former Huddersfield boss has seen his side fail to land a single victory across any competition since the start of February. Freefalling away from the European chase and the mood around Gelsenkirchen at a season-low, Schalke have also gained a worrying reputation from across Germany for their continued issues on home soil. Including what was an embarrassing 3-0 drumming at home against relegation outsiders Augsburg last month, the Blues have failed to win any of their last six matchups at the Veltins Arena.
As for the visitors, booking their spot in the final of this year’s DFP Pokal for the first time since 2009 in midweek, the mood in Bayer Leverkusen’s camp should be at a continued high. Still in the race to secure a Champions League return this year, Head Coach Peter Bosz will be hugely excited by Kai Havertz’s purple patch either side of the break. Finding the net away at Ibrox back in March and helping Leverkusen book their spot in the quarter-final of this year’s Europa League, the German sensation should be relishing a return from injury this weekend. Now bagging eight goals in his last nine matches across all formats, the Chelsea target has also landed five goals in just his last three appearances away from the BayArena, including back-to-back braces against Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen.
