New Blackburn boss Steve Kean has expressed his delight at securing his first win at the helm after a 3-1 away triumph over West Brom.
The 43-year-old Scot was thrust into the lead role after Sam Allardyce was sacked by the club’s new owners, the Venky Group, much to the dismay of supporters.
And following a 2-0 home defeat to Stoke on Boxing Day, Kean finally has something to smile about after a brace from Croatian striker Nikola Kalinic and another strike from Mame Biram Diouf handed his side their first win since December 4.
“I thought we played some good stuff,” Kean told Sky Sports.
“We were a little bit disappointed to let them back into the game, but we mentioned the space we had allowed them down the flanks and I thought we dealt with that well in the second half.”
“We played some nice stuff and scored some good goals. I’m really happy.”
Kean praised substitute goalkeeper Mark Bunn, who made his Premier League debut when regular shot-stopper Paul Robinson came off at half-time with a calf problem.
“He is a great goalkeeper. He is a magnificent back-up goalkeeper and I think he showed that today,” he said.
“Paul Robinson had a little tug on his calf but we have showed today that if Mark Bunn has to go in goal he can pull off saves like he did at this level.”
West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo conceded he was disappointed to let more points slip away at home, and the newly promoted outfit head into the New Year just four points clear of the relegation zone.
“We are a bit down today because it was a big chance for us to get some more points on the board, playing at home,” he said.
“We are disappointed because we conceded an early goal and then it becomes a big mountain to climb.”
“Having said that, we got ourselves back into the game in the first half and finished it strongly. Then we gave away two sloppy goals from set-pieces and we need to do better than that or it is going to be very difficult to win games.”
“We could have had a good cushion of points, but we have to regroup now and start again.”
“We have another half a season to prove that we are worthy of staying in the Premier League.”
