Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has revealed that he may sell striker Robbie Keane in the January transfer window.
The Irish international has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane and looks set to move elsewhere.
Rivals
Keane is currently behind England strikers Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe and also Russian international Roman Pavlyuchenko.
The situation was the same last season and he ended up moving to Celtic on-loan last January. Any move this January will likely to be a permanent one.
Regular
When asked whether he had held talks with Keane over his situation, Redknapp said: “I think he’d like to move – he wants to play, you know?
“Whoever offers the biggest fee will, I suppose, be the answer in January. He’s not used to not playing. All his career, he’s played and been a big player and he wants to play. He could sit here and take his wages, but that’s not him.
Redknapp knows the quality that Keane brings to the team but at the moment he has other options. Keane wasn’t even on the bench for last week’s clash with Liverpool and Redknapp admitted it was a hard decision to leave him out of his squad.
Fresh
Robbie Keane is still a quality player. The last few seasons haven’t gone his way and it’s probably now time for him to move on. He hasn’t been a regular at Tottenham for awhile and a fresh start at a new club is just what he needs.
He is still capable of performing at the top level. He may have lost a yard or so of pace but his movement and technique are right up there with some of the best. He also works incredibly hard for the team.
He does however need to play regular football and that’s what he hasn’t had recently. Robbie Keane’s talent is wasted by him warming the Tottenham bench. He needs some games to help him regain his confidence and if he gets a run of games he will likely regain his form.
Destination
The rumour mill has already gone into full swing. There have been rumours linking Keane with a move to newly re-formed MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. However I still think he has a future in the Premier League.
Gerard Houllier’s Aston Villa has also been linked with the former-Liverpool and Leeds star. I would love to see him at Everton, despite him being an ex-Liverpool player. The Toffee’s are in desperate need of a new striker and Keane would be welcomed with open arms.
Unfortunately it seems that Everton have no money to spend and Harry Redknapp has already stated that Keane will go to the club who offer the biggest fee. That would rule out a move to Goodison Park, even if Keane is available at a knockdown price.
Celtic
Last season Robbie Keane had a good spell on-loan at SPL side Celtic scoring 16 goals in 19 appearances. He was a boyhood Celtic fan, so it was a dream move for the striker to move to Parkhead. Maybe if he can’t secure a move to another Premier League side then Celtic would be a decent move for him.
He would once again enjoy hero status at Parkhead and it would probably be the last move of his career. I’m sure finishing his career with the Hoops would be the perfect ending for a player who has been a top professional.
