Keane wants result to spark Ipswich

Having seen his side upset West Brom on Wednesday, Roy Keane now has urged Ipswich Town to transform their Carling Cup form into the league.

The Championship strugglers – 17th on the table – shocked their English Premier League opponents in a 1-0 win at Portman Road in the Carling Cup, with a Grant Leadbitter penalty ensuring Town progressed to a two-legged semi-final date with Arsenal in January.

Keane believes it was a result his side fully deserved: “This performance was pretty good tonight, I have to say,” the normally reserved former Manchester United midfielder told Sky Sports.

“It doesn’t always guarantee you’ll get the right result, but I thought we deserved it tonight.”

“We should have won the game by three or four. Of course when it’s 1-0 the game’s never over.”

“We had four or five great chances. Their keeper, to be fair, made some great saves. It took a penalty to win the game but I think we deserved that.”

With the Carling Cup’s semi-finals not until January, Keane and Ipswich return their attention back on the club’s Championship campaign. The side has struggled to string consistent results together this season, but Keane hopes the West Brom win can prove a catalyst for an uplift in fortunes.

“I’m pleased for the players, I’m pleased for the supporters. It’s been a frustrating time for everyone at the club, but it’s a good night for everyone,” he said.

“What we have to do now is bring that into our league form. We’ll enjoy tonight’s result, but obviously our bread and butter is the Championship.”
