Toulouse goalkeeper Ali Ahamada says he anticipated scoring his shock leveller in a 2-2 draw with Rennes on Saturday.

The 21-year-old looked set to be on the losing side, with Toulouse 2-1 behind and the clock ticking down deep into injury-time, before his remarkable intervention.

Ahamada went forward for a 94th-minute free-kick, and defied expectations to head home a dramatic equaliser.

“It was weird at first, but I really had the image in my mind that I would score, when I was jumping with the rest of my team-mates for the ball,” he told Beln Sport.

“Above all, I’m happy for my team, who completed an amazing turnaround. We deserved a result, after the work we dedicated to our attacks.”

Coach Alain Casanova, who turned out as a goalkeeper for the club during his playing days, also lauded Ahamada’s unexpected contribution.

“I’ve told him he is far from my record. I scored three, and they were not with the head but volleys,” Casanova joked after the game.

“He is high on confidence now and that shows we were right to place our trust in him.”
