Keeper James in dark over Capello’s World Cup plans

England goalkeeper David James admits he has no idea if he will start the World Cup as Fabio Capello’s number one.

James capped a series of impressive performances in the closing weeks of the season by making a string of fine saves during Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

The former Liverpool star couldn’t prevent Portsmouth losing 1-0 at Wembley, but his form has made him the favourite to start for England in South Africa.

However, Capello has given James no indication whether he, West Ham’s Robert Green or Manchester City’s Joe Hart will be in goal for England’s opening World Cup match against the United States on June 12.

“It’s frustrating to go to a World Cup and not play. In Japan, in 2002, David Seaman was the outstanding number one, but I didn’t know where I was in the pecking order for number two,” James told The Sun.

“The last World Cup in Germany wasn’t so bad because it was a bit more defined. Paul Robinson was in goal and I was number two.

“This time I genuinely don’t know where I am. Mr Capello does not give too much away.

“The way he sets his squad out means it is no longer a case of a first eleven with an additional number of players.

“All I know is that I am totally fit and happy with myself and my form. And I’d like to think that other people are also happy with me.”
