Smelling a golden chance to cash in on Marseille’s extended issues, a high-flying Monaco will welcome Les Phocéens to the Stade Louis II on Saturday night.
Starting with the hosts, really finding their feet after bringing in former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovač, Monaco have continued to gain a string of plaudits this season. Collecting 13 points from their last five Ligue 1 matchups and with an ever-growing record for their clinical displays in the final third, it could be well worth keeping an eye out for a red-hot Kevin Volland on Saturday night. Once again getting himself on the scoresheet in a dramatic 3-2 win away at Montpellier last weekend, the 28-year-old is certainly enjoying his most fruitful spell at the Stade Louis II. Already notching himself 10 top-flight strikes this season and still firmly mixing it in the race for the Golden Boot, the former Bayer Leverkusen forward has also managed to find the net in his last five straight appearances.
As for the visitors, while Monaco might find themselves enjoying a real purple patch, the same can not be said for a struggling Marseille. Putting in what was another sluggish display earlier in the week, former Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas saw his side hit with a shock 1-0 loss at home against Lens. Now coming off the back of back-to-back defeats and just a single point to their name in their last three Ligue 1 appearances, Les Phocéens have gained a real reputation for their issues on the road. Along with watching defending champions PSG lift the Trophée des Champions thanks to a 2-1 win earlier in the month, Marseille have in fact failed to win any of their last five straight contests away from the Orange Vélodrome, losing four of those matchups.
