Notts County today confirmed that Harry Kewell has left his position as manager following a poor start to the campaign. The Australian was considered to be a surprise appointment by many and in the wake of his ‘sacking’, or departure depending on your viewpoint, many fans have opened up the door to the discussion regarding former players turning towards management.
While the majority of managers did indeed play professionally prior to reaching the point they’re at today, there’s something to be said for purely hiring someone based on name value. The 40 year old had only previously spent time with Crawley Town and the Watford U23s, after retiring from the game back in 2014. Many Notts County fans will forever look back on this period of time with a degree of confusion, and it’ll be interesting to see how Kewell rebounds from this when he makes his next move in the world of football.
