German media outlet Bild is reporting that Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar could soon be returning to Ajax.
The 33-year-old is no longer regarded a first team regular at Veltins Arena, while his current deal is due to expire at the end of the season.
The contract will be automatically extended if Huntelaar takes part in half of the games this season, but that seems highly unlikely, especially now that he has picked up a knee injury.
Chances are that Schalke officials will not be too disappointed to see the veteran striker leave given his salary of €7 million per campaign, while the player looks ready to quit the Miners as well.
Namely, Huntelaar hopes to return to Ajax in the January transfer window, and that seems the best solution for all the parties concerned.
The Netherlands international has enjoyed plenty of success at Schalke, scoring 81 goals in 166 Bundesliga outings.
