Veteran striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar has returned to Dutch giants Ajax, the Eredivisie side announced on their official website.
The 33-year-old was set to become a free agent with his contract at Schalke coming to an end and he jumped at the opportunity to return to Amsterdam ArenA.
Huntelaar signed a one-year deal with Ajax and he hopes to help the Amsterdammers in Europe and also win his first Eredivisie title with the club.
“It’s no secret that Ajax is my club, so I’m very glad to return,” Huntelaar said.
“I feel very fit and I’m already looking forward to the end of June when the preseason preparation begins.
“I won trophies with Ajax, but not the title. That is the goal at the end of the season.”
Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars made it clear that talented youngster Kasper Dolberg remained their first choice striker, but he does expect Huntelaar to become a key member of the squad.
During his first spell at Amsterdam ArenA, the centre forward bagged 105 goals in just 136 competitive appearances.
