Klopp: I´ll throw a party if Man City lose their Premier League titles

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that he would organise a party on the island of Mallorca if the Premier League stripped Manchester City of their titles due to the investigation into their 115 charges.

Liverpool finished second to Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City while under Klopp in 2018-19 and 2021-22, while they also won the 2019-20 title.

Since that period of dominance, City were referred to an independent commission by the Premier League in 2023, having been charged 115 times with financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.

While the club have always maintained their innocence, speculation is rife as to how they could be punished should the independent commission find them guilty. Anything from relegation, heavy fines and having their titles retrospectively stripped has been proffered as a potential outcome.

Speaking at his first public appearance since becoming Red Bull’s head of global soccer, Klopp suggested that he would not shed any tears if the Premier League were to take their titles away.

“We had this discussion when I left,” he said. “I haven’t spent a lot of time in Mallorca because I am always flying around the place. But if it would happen, I told all the people who wanted to [come]: ‘Just book a flight to Mallorca. I will buy the beer!’ We’d have our own parade in my garden.”

The 57-year-old also fired a shot at the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, which gets under way this summer. Klopp was not a fan of the tournament, suggesting that it would be harmful for football.

“I think it’s useless. It doesn’t help if you have no summer break,” he said.

“Who wins the tournament is the poorest winner of all time because he has to play the whole summer through and then the league starts again. We have now a lot of injuries in European football.

“We have to reduce the amount of games. That means in some leagues it would be better [if] you have 18 instead of 20. That means in other competitions, you don’t add games.”
