KNVB Beker wrap: PSV out, Utrecht through

Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven were dumped from the KNVB Beker on Wednesday, losing a penalty shootout to FC Twente.

Twente, who trail PSV by one point in the league standings, took the lead in their Dutch cup quarter-final via a 70th-minute penalty converted by midfielder Theo Janssen.

It looked to be the winning goal for the hosts at De Grolsch Veste, but a 90th-minute equaliser from PSV’s Danny Koevermans – his fourth of the competition – ensured extra-time was necessary.

After extra-time went goalless, Twente edged the shootout 7-6 to reach the final four.

Elsewhere, FC Utrecht took the lead on three separate occasions in their quarter-final against Groningen before holding on to win 3-2 at the Stadion Galgenwaard.

The hosts went ahead in the 12th minute when Belgian defender Jan Wuytens scored, but Groningen pegged them back with an 18th-minute equaliser from Tim Matavz.

Dries Mertens restored Utrecht’s lead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, but four minutes after the break Groningen were level again after defnder Andreas Granqvist converted his own spot kick.

Ghanaian midfielder Nana Asare had the final say for Utrecht, scoring in the 53rd minute to once again put the home side ahead.

This time there would be no comeback as Ton du Chatinier’s side advanced to the semi-finals.
