Kompany: City will bounce back

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany says his side will respond well to their 3-2 loss to Manchester United in the Community Shield.

Roberto Mancini’s team held a 2-0 lead at the break at Wembley on Sunday before a brace from Nani and a Chris Smalling goal gave United their 19th Shield win.

But Kompany said City would react well to the loss ahead of their English Premier League opener against Swansea.

“It wasn’t the best of results obviously, but I don’t think we played at our potential today,” he said.

“We would have liked to win this game, but in a way we will react really well after defeat and bad results.”

City struck twice in the last nine minutes of the first half through Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko before United’s comeback.

Kompany said getting so close despite not being at their best showed City were going to be serious threats this season.

“We’re very confident and we’ve seen today by not really playing our best game that not being at the top, we can still be very dangerous,” he said.

“It was really close regardless if we were at our best or not.”

Manchester United defender Smalling, who scored seven minutes into the second half to start the comeback, said City were a genuine title threat.

“I do see them up there. I mean Chelsea obviously as well, but Manchester City are getting stronger and stronger,” he said.

“Last year they did well, so I’d expect to see them up there, definitely up there for the title.”

United open their Premier League campaign with a trip to West Bromwich Albion.
