It hasn’t been a well-kept secret that Mateo Kovačić is looking to leave Real Madrid before the transfer window ends this summer, and according to Marca, Manchester United have put in a €60million bid for his services. However, the player refused the move as he doesn’t think the style of manager Jose Mourinho would be a good fit for him.
Meanwhile, Real’s newly appointed coach Julen Lopetegui is keen on keeping the midfielder. But in order to succeed in convincing him to stay put, he will need to offer guarantees of more minutes on the pitch than has been usual since the Croatian arrived to the club three years ago. That won’t be easy, of course, with the likes of Luka Modrić, Casemiro and Toni Kroos holding their spots in the team firmly.
Kovačić has already expressed his belief that leaving Santiago Bernabeu would be the best thing to do for him, and while a team like Real Madrid needs quality backup players, it’s hard to argue against the stance that the development of the 24-year-old is being severely hampered by lack of playing time.
But if he goes somewhere, it won’t be to Manchester United.
