Real Madrid moved six points clear at the top of La Liga thanks to a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday, as Barcelona lost to Getafe.
Jose Mourinho’s Real had to come from behind after Adrian gave Atletico the lead in the 14th minute at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Real were level nine minutes later.
Atletico’s on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois received his marching orders for bringing down Karim Benzema inside the box, and Cristiano Ronaldo dispatched the resulting penalty to make it 1-1.
The 10-man visitors remained on level terms going into the half-time break.
But they fell behind just three minutes after the restart, with Angel di Maria allowed time and space inside the area to fire Real in front.
Gonzalo Higuain made it 3-1 in the 65th minute, rounding Atletico’s substitute goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to guide the ball into an empty net.
Atletico were down to nine men with 10 minutes to go, as Diego Godin received a straight red for a foul on Higuain inside the box.
Ronaldo netted his second penalty of the match, sealing a 4-1 win for Real.
The derby victory would become all the more sweet later in the day, as champions Barcelona went down 1-0 away to Getafe.
Pep Guardiola’s visitors struck the woodwork and had a late strike disallowed for a questionable offside decision at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
But they left empty-handed following fullback Juan Valera’s headed goal in the 67th minute.
Barca’s first defeat of the season in all competitions leaves them second, six points back from leaders Real.
Also on Saturday, goals from Jonas and Alberto Costa helped Valencia win 2-1 away to Rayo Vallencano.
Unai Emery’s side are third, now just one point behind Barca.
