Reports are suggesting that Philip Anschutz, the billionaire LA Galaxy owner, is in advanced talks with representatives of Mike Ashley in relation to buying Newcastle United.
It is strongly believed that should Anschutz take over, he will want to get the Toon Army quickly on board. As a result of that, Alan Shearer has become ‘odds on’ favourite to be the next manager of the club.
Shearer has been linked with the Newcastle job, and others, before but has always said that the time wasn’t right. Just last month however, he said, “Management interests me. I can’t turn round and say ‘yes, I would be delighted to come to Newcastle’, because that would be wrong of me. But management interests me, at some stage of my career. I wouldn’t rule anything out.”
On Sunday, his best friend, Robert Lee, said on Sky Sports that he thought that Shearer was ‘ready for management.’
According to the Daily Telegraph, the only serious threat to Anschutz is Dallas-based businessman Clark Hunt, who owns MLS side FC Dallas and NFL outfit Kansas City Chiefs.
Maybe the saga is finally coming to a conclusion.
