Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has withdrawn from the England squad to face the Netherlands on Wednesday due to illness.

The experienced international joins Jack Wilshere and Michael Carrick on the list of central midfielders who are unavailable for the clash, after he contracted a throat infection.

Tom Cleverley has already been called up as a replacement after he put in an impressive performance for Manchester United in Sunday’s FA Community Shield victory over rivals Manchester City.

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent withdrew from the team sheet as he nurses an injured shoulder.

Danny Welbeck, another United youth who impressed at the weekend, is in the squad and could feature.

The Netherlands – the beaten 2010 FIFA World Cup finalists – could be without Arsenal’s Robin van Persie, with the striker troubled by an ankle problem.
