England midfielder Frank Lampard has been ruled out of Friday’s World Cup qualifier with San Marino.
The Chelsea man has failed to overcome a knee problem and has returned to his club in a bid to regain fitness before Tuesday’s meeting with Poland in Warsaw.
Lampard’s absence increases the likelihood of Roy Hodgson deploying Wayne Rooney in midfield – a role he has taken up at Manchester United recently.
Rooney could also be named as captain with Steven Gerrard suspended.
