Landon Donovan ponders possible Everton return

Los Angeles Galaxy and USA midfielder Landon Donovan will take the next few weeks to ponder the possibility of again playing overseas, perhaps with a return to English Premier League club Everton.

“My plan is to rest over the next few weeks and get in a mental place where I can make a proper decision,” said Donovan, who played in 30 of the past 33 months, including all four of the USA’s World Cup matches.

“If you ask me today, I would say ‘no’ because my body is exhausted. If you ask me in two months, I would probably say ‘yeah’ because I’m excited again.”

Donovan and the Galaxy lost to FC Dallas in the MLS Western Conference final on Sunday, missing out on a berth in the MLS Cup championship match.

Donovan indicated that if he did decide to again head overseas it would most likely be back to Everton, where he spent 10 weeks on loan earlier this year.

“I would say so, yeah,” Donovan said when asked if there was only one place he would consider playing on loan.

Donovan’s four-year contract with the Galaxy allows him to play on loan overseas.

“I realize I have only so many more years to play and to have a real opportunity to do this,” the 28-year-old said.

In August, Everton manager David Moyes said that Donovan would likely prove too expensive to bring back on loan a second time.

“We don’t have the finances,” Moyes told www.evertonfc.com. “The price the MLS want for him is very big and it’s an additional problem because of his age.”

In July, MLS commissioner Don Garber said the US league wanted to keep its homegrown superstar on home soil.

“MLS needs soccer heroes, and we have a great American soccer hero playing for us in LA, holding the torch for the sport in our country, and that’s very important,” Garber said.
