Barcelona president Joan Laporta admits he would like to see Xavi and Sergio Busquets extend their contracts with the club.

Xavi and Busquets have both insisted that they would like to stay at the Catalan club.

“It is a matter that lies chiefly with Txiki, but I think that the negotiations need to be pushed forward in the interest of both parties,” the Barcelona supremo told Sport.

“Xavi and Busquets are two players of the present and future and I think that they feel very clearly that their priority is Barcelona and that they will be with us for many more years.

“We will make every effort to retain them.”

Laporta also commented on their disappointing 1-1 draw with Basel: “We have achieved our objective. Now we will play Sporting for top spot, which is also important.

“I want to congratulate the players. We have to continue with this intensity and humility. We dominated, but we did not have much luck.”
