Late goal irks Jol

Fulham manager Martin Jol was disappointed to concede late in their 1-0 defeat at FC Twente in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Dutchman was happy with the way his side had coped defensively up until the moment substitute Marc Janko scored in the 89th minute to secure all three points for the Eredivisie outfit.

Janko found himself under no pressure close to goal, and he casually side-footed the ball past Mark Schwarzer after a great cross from Roberto Rosales.

“That’s always disappointing because in the second-half we did well defensively from their crosses,” Jol told Fulham’s website.

“Normally we’re very good at defending crosses so that was harsh.”

“We put on (Pajtim) Kasami for (Moussa) Dembele, who had asked for a substitution, then you hope to keep the ball in their half – but we couldn’t do that and they broke and scored.”

“(Damien) Duff has got a problem with his calf, he was out for two weeks then he came back but it’s the same problem. Dembele hopefully is fine. Damien could be a problem for Monday (against Liverpool) but I expect Moussa to play.”

Fulham were reduced to 10 men shortly after the goal when striker Andy Johnson’s second bookable offence saw him sent off.

Jol was angered by the forward’s lack of discipline after his second caution came for kicking the ball away in frustration after conceding a free-kick.

“That was not what you want,” Jol said.

“We need all of our players and Andy Johnson is scoring goals.”

The defeat leaves Fulham needing to beat Danish side Odense in their final game of Group K to make sure of qualification for the next round.
